Local SEO for service businesses — what actually moves the needle

Practical local SEO priorities for North East service businesses — without ranking guarantees or vanity metrics.

Most local SEO advice is either too vague or obsessed with keyword counts. For a service business, the question is simpler: when someone searches for what you do in your area, can they understand why they should choose you?

Start with the site, not the map pack

Google Business Profile matters — but sending traffic to a weak website wastes the click. Before aggressive SEO spend, make sure the homepage and service pages answer three things: what you do, where you work, and how to enquire.

Fix the basics first

  • Clear service pages with local context where relevant
  • Consistent name, address and phone (if you have a premises)
  • Search Console and analytics connected
  • Page titles and meta descriptions that describe real services
  • Internal links between related services and locations

Measure enquiries, not traffic

Rankings fluctuate. What matters is whether organic search produces qualified calls, form fills and quote requests. Track those events explicitly — otherwise SEO becomes a report about impressions.

Give it time

Local SEO typically needs at least three months before you can judge direction. Competitive trades and cities take longer. Scope the engagement to match realistic timescales.
